Digital Earth Lab Info. and Policies

Welcome to the Digital Earth Classroom!

Digital Earth (dusk.geo.orst.edu/de) is equipped with 25 student workstations, an instructor workstation and a server(\\Sci-geo). The workstations are Dell Dimension 8200 with 2.0GHz Pentium 4 processors, 1.0GB RAM, and 64MB video cards. The server is a Dell Precision 530 Workstation with two 2.0 MHz Xeon processors, 1GB RAM, and two 120GB hard drives. The laboratory also has a Sanyo overhead projector, a HP LaserJet 8100 black and white printer with duplexer, a HP Color LaserJet 4500 printer with duplexer, and a HP DesignJet 36" color large format printer.

A College of Science Active Directory account is required to logon and access the server. Lab Manager Mark Meyers has created an account for each non Geosciences student. Accounts for Geosciences faculty and graduate students are created by COSINe. Mark has guest accounts for students to use until they get their own account.

All students have 200 MB of work space on the server (\\sci-geo ). This will be the only local space available to students. Please note that local drives are NOT secure and are cleaned from time to time. Please do NOT save data to the local C: drive. The server is NOT backed up. Students are responsible for their own backups. Each computer is equipped with a CD-RW drive and a 250 MB Zip drive.

To access workspace on the server, logon to a computer by selecting the SCIENCE domain from the options menu. After initially logging on you need to map a drive to your class folder.

You should be able to access this workspace from any computer on campus by logging on through the SCIENCE domain.

Mapped drives will ONLY be saved on the local machine profile. If the same machine is used and "Reconnect at login" was selected the drive should reappear in My Computer. If a student moves to another machine they will need to map the drive again.

NOTE: The first time someone uses Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office the system will ask for some setup information.

Each class is provided with four folders.

Instructors and TAs have full control over all files and folders in their class directory.

PRINTING:

The printers are supported by the Department of Geosciences and laboratory fees. These fees are to help offset the cost of software and printer maintenance. Fees do not amount to complete compensation for services offered in this classroom. PLEASE USE THIS SERVICE JUDICIOUSLY! Refer to additional Digital Earth Policies at dusk.geo.orst.edu/de/de_policies.html for more information. Printing personal items such as email, web pages and images not related to class assignments or using the printers as copy machines are NOT appropriate.

Mark has installed software that monitors printer use and allows him to establish page or dollar quotas on individuals. The quota is currently set to $10.00. If a student exceeds their quota they will be prohibited from printing in Digital Earth. You may always print from other locations on campus.

LABORATORY HOURS AND ACCESS:

In general, Digital Earth is unlocked from 7:00 to 5:00. Mark will keep current a laboratory schedule. He will also post weekly schedules outside the door to Wilkinson 210 and on the wall behind the instructor's work station.

For security reasons, students cannot be left unattended in the lab after regular hours.

SOFTWARE AVAILABLE: ArcGIS 8.2, ArcView 3.3, ERDAS Imagine 8.6, GeoMedia Professional, Idrisi 32, Macromedia Freehand 1.0, Mathematica 4.2, Microsoft Office Professional, MicroCAM (map projections), GMS 3.1 (ground water hydrology), S+ w/Wavelets and Spatial Modules, Secure Shell (telnet and ftp ), Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, WinZip, other goodies
