From last year - to be updated SUBSTANTIALLY for the Blackboard Discussion environment. Discussions will be graded via a point system..... From: Deepsea Dawn Date: January 6, 2009 5:46:59 PM PST To: geo599_ethics@lists.oregonstate.edu Cc: Deepsea Dawn , Mark Meyers Subject: GEO 599 Ethics Reading Assignments for next week Greetings Ethical GISers, For next week, I'd like everyone to read Chapter 2 of Quinn and Proctor (1998) for background reading. A quote from Proctor (1998) was given in class yesterday. We will then seek to discuss: Crampton (1995) Onsrud (1995) Onsrud (2008) We will discuss these in chronological order as this important in seeing how ideas and perspectives have developed over time. All readings are downloadable from http://dusk.geo.orst.edu/ethics/sched09.html . These are all pretty short papers, so I'd like 3 brave volunteers to *each* take *one* of these papers and lead the class in a discussion of it. EVERYONE should read the papers, even if not volunteering to lead. At some point in the term, everyone will need to play the role of discussion leader. We will take ~25 minutes on each paper, so the leader should: (1) summarize the main ideas of the paper and reflect on the two most important things you learned from the paper. (2) pose 1 or 2 questions to the rest of the class to prompt a general discussion among the group. Please use "reply all" to this message when you volunteer (or if you have a question about the above). Many thanks, Dawn
