Distance Ed. Lab Schedule
Fall Term 2006

For the laboratory portion of this course you will complete a series of self-paced modules from the text Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop. The text includes a CDROM with a working version of ArcView 9 and a second CDROM with all the data sets that you will need.

Please make sure that you have NOT purchased a USED copy of this book or that you have purchased an older, first edition (for ArcGIS 8)!! It is best to have a brand new, 2nd edition (ArcGIS 9) book because the accompanying software CD is a trial, single use CD. Once it used by someone prior, it cannot be reinstalled, nor can the time limit on it be extended. So, if you get a used copy you will definitely run in to problems, unless you already have access to a computer or lab that has its own copy, fully-licensed copy of ArcGIS installed. In that case you could load the data locally and go through the labs with the licensed copy of the software on that machine.

You may take anywhere from 1 to 5 days to work on a lab for a given week but you MUST complete the lab by the end of that week. At least 10 out of the total 50 points will be deducted for labs that are excessively late. Check the schedule below for due dates.

See pages 555-563 (Appendix B) at the back of your book for instructions on installing the applications on your CDs.

Click here if you run into trouble with the ArcView 9 CD (ESRI evaluation software help, www.esri.com/software/evalhelp.html)

Click here for information on purchasing your own student copy of ArcView 9, which may ultimately save you the most hassle in the end, and can be used for other GIS courses or work that you undertake.

Labs must be uploaded to the supplemental BLACKBOARD web site (my.oregonstate.edu), in Tools ---> Dropbox by 5:00 p.m. every SATURDAY. For labs requiring written responses, please use Microsoft Word. Your write-up and screen snapshots can easily be incorporated into a SINGLE Microsoft Word document, and then uploaded to the Dropbox. Most PCs do screen snapshots with the "Print Screen" key (on Windows XP it is Print Screen) that sends the image file to the Clipboard (see more info. below). If you do not or cannot use Microsoft Word, please save your document as an RTF (Rich Text Format) file and send that. Most word processors have RTF as an alternative format to save documents to.
