We covered quite a bit of ground, starting off with basic definitions (e.g., "distributed computing" - "internet GIS" - "interoperable GIS" - "OpenGIS") and branched off from there to discuss hardware and software issues, metadata, and societal impacts, particularly in developing countries. Most fascinating! Now I think that it would be interesting to spend this week actually looking at some web sites that showcase the geographic information technologies that we have been talking about. I have chosen several web sites and created a new thread for each category so that we won't get too confused (I hope). These web sites come from companion web site to the definitive book (thus far) on distributed computing, "GIS Online", written by Brandon Plewe of Brigham Young, one of the co-authors of the Distributed Computing white paper. Choose a web site thread and start or jump into an open discussion of what you think about the site. Is it effective? Why or why not? How do you think the site could be improved in terms of the underlying computing architecture? Also, should user interfaces for these distributed computing sites be any different than for a standalone (non-distributed) GIS session? These are just some questions to get the ball rolling. Ok, here are the different web site threads to choose from: * Research/Development/Standards in Distributed Computing The Open Geospatial Datastore Interface http://www.ogdi.org/ogdiri * GRASSLinks Australia A WWW interface to the AGCRC-4DGM Database which includes maps covering the geography, geology, and geophysics of Australia http://www.agcrc.csiro.au/4dgm/grasslinks * Interactive Taiwan http://peacock.tnjc.edu.tw/ADD/maps/taiwanmap.html * The Planet Mars NASA Planetray Data System's Mars Explorer http://www-pdsimage.wr.usgs.gov/PDS/public/mapmaker/mapmkr.htm * Web-based GIS MANY links that provide "full" GIS capabilities online (take your pick) http://www.geog.byu.edu/gisonline/links/webgis.htm (http://forums.library.orst.edu/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=7&Message_ID=2083)
