Hello out there! Welcome to the second annual UCGIS Virtual Seminar. This week we won't really get in to any serious topics or discussion. We'll just spend time getting used to this "virtual classroom" environment. If you haven't already done so, please let me know that you've registered for this forum so that I can add you to the list of users for the forum. That way you will have all the system privileges allocated to you, which will be very important when we change topies. Hope to hear from you soon, Dawn Oregon State (http://forums.library.orst.edu/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=7&Message_ID=1061) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Top][Previous][Next][Print][Reply][Edit*][Move*][Delete*] Date: September 10, 1998 10:29 AM Author: Ronald William Ward (ronward@arches.uga.edu) Subject: hello everyone I thought we could begin by indroducing ourselves. My name is Ron Ward and I'm here at the University of Georgia. My interests (specific to geography and GIS) include biogeography and human-environmental interaction. I took the seminar because I've had the intro to GIS course (in which we learn the software) and I can see that there are plenty of possible GIS applications I will be able to utilize for my dissertation (I'm a PhD student). Looking forward to hearing (well - reading) from those of you taking the course through other universities! kazi kazi (Swahili for 'work work'), Ron Ward (http://forums.library.orst.edu/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=7&Message_ID=1069) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Top][Previous][Next][Print][Reply][Edit*][Move*][Delete*] Date: September 10, 1998 01:42 PM Author: Dawn Wright (dawn@dusk.geo.orst.edu) Subject: Getting acclimated Hello everyone, Glad to see Ron's posting from U of Georgia. Hope everyone else has been able to log in and started getting used to the virtual environment. The software that we are using for our Virtual seminar is called Allaire Forums. The Allaire company seems to be making quite a name for itself. The founders of company, J.J. and Jeremy Allaire, 27 and 29 years old respectively, are 2 upstarts from Macalester College in Minnesota! They have a small army of M.I.T. geeks running their main operations in Boston. J.J. and Jeremy have been recognized recently as 2 of the most influential people on the web, behind the developer of Java Script. Allaire Forums is a fairly popular web-based threaded discussion application that runs on Windows NT servers. Hopefully you have found the interface to be somewhat intuitive. The buttons at the very top of the page: "Back" "Refresh" "Options" and "Search" are pretty self-explanatory. You might want to check out "Options" if you haven't already done so. "Options" will let you tailor your virtual environment to your liking. You can change the font and size of the text that you see, have the software email you about all messages that have been posted in a particular thread, etc. Speaking of terms such as "messages," "thread," etc. perhaps it would be good to go over some basic concepts in Allaire Forums. A "message" is just that - a message that you compose in reply to another message (just as in email) or to start or add to a thread. A "thread" is a topic. It can be created by any of us to narrow a discussion down to a particular topic or subtopic. Right now I am composing this "message" to be part of the "thread" called Welcome (welcome to the course). A "forum" is a topic area that is defined by an Allaire administrator (in this case me). We will have a different "forum" for each of the UCGIS research priorities that we will discuss during the course (spatial analysis, geographic representations, GIS & society, etc.). Right now we are in the "forum" entitled "Dawn's Forum #1". A "conference" is like a virtual classroom. It is defined by an administrator to embrace a broad topic or virtual community of users. Our "conference" is the virtual seminar itself. It has the title "Dawn's Demo Conference". Hope this helps to give you a leg up on what we're dealing with technology-wise. You can access a complete user's guide to Allaire Forums at: http://forums.library.orst.edu/forums/docs/user/index.htm Note also that our "conference" has been changed to a different server. You've probably already noticed this. We are now at http://forums.library.orst.edu/forums/index.cfm?CFApp=7 Have a good day! Is there some way to customize how the systems illustrates new messages in the thread? As someone who is somewhat visually color-challenged (that is, color-blind) it is hard for me to distinguish between them and is difficult to determine which articles have been read. Also, is there a way to get the system to update which articles have been read without logging out and logging back in? It seems that the only way to get the color changed is to do this which makes it hard to determine which articles you have read in a session. Thanks! Try going to "Options" from the initial seminar page after you log in. Or go to the URL that I posted earlier that takes you to the Allaire documentation. Hopefully by now you have solved your problem though. Take care and thanks for your participation in the seminar. I'll be back in Oregon on Sept. 26th.
