      Track of Pisces V submersible dive P5-650,
      Fagatele Bay & Canyon, American Samoa, 4 hours 14 mins
      (bottom time), Dawn Wright(OrSt) and Doug Fenner (Am. Samoa
      DMWR) observers, Max Cremer pilot. Trackline generalized
      from raw nav.
    Purpose:
      (1)	Investigate full extent of sheer carbonate wall
      encountered on P5-648. Find base and then video and
      photographic survey north, wall to ledge and then E at a
      contour of interest, making observations of biota and
      physical structure
      (2)	Species identification of as many corals and fish as possible

        The submersible's position is routinely monitored using an
        ORE Ultrashort Baseline Tracking
        system and a Sonotech Long Baseline Tracking system in
        conjunction with references such as
        Global Positioning System satellites and radar fixes. Error

        Research Lab

      Process_Description:
        (1) Pull raw nav into Excel and cut out extraneous columns
        (second columns of lat/long are good ones, not first) -
        column headings at this point are year mon day hr min sec
        lat long
        (2) Save copy as text, but then open in Word and re-save as
        "MS-DOS Text with Line Breaks"
        (3) Edit in VI editor to separate out lat/longs

        (4) Use simple awk command to assign a line (ID) number to
        each record
        awk '{ print NR, $0 }' < 648.txt > track648.txt
        (5) Pull back into Excel with both tab *and* space
        delimiters Sort by 0's in lat or long and delete
        (7) Re-sort by line/ID number to get original sequence of
        positions back
        (8) Convert decimal minute lat/longs to decimal degrees
        (9) Insert waypoint #'s and their depths as an additional
        attributes Save as Text (tab-delimited) or dbf (Dbase IV)
        for to ArcGIS 9.x or ArcView 3.x
        (11) Input points into ArcGIS with ArcMap-->Tools-->Add XY
        or into ArcView with Tables-->Add New Table. Convert to
        shape Input lines in ArcView with GPS2Shape avenue script
        from ArcScripts (data must be converted to comma delimited
        with only ID, long, lat
        (13) Generalize iteratively in ArcGIS ArcTools or with PPL
        Tools 12 from ArcScripts - a tolerance of 15 m seemed to
        work well - 2497 vertices reduced to 144.
        (14) Project later to from geographic decimal degrees to
        UTM Zone
        2S WGS84
        (15) Write the metadata!
