Introduction

Renewable energy technologies are taking on new importance as humanity grapples with the reality of global warming and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels. Wind power is a renewable energy technology that is expanding worldwide due to its relatively low cost and environmental impact. Geographic Information Systems can offer many tools to facilitate wind power development and evaluate its impacts. The location of wind power facilities and the matching of available technology to local conditions are of critical importance to the success of wind power development. GIS is a technology uniquely suited to situations where 'location matters'. This bibliography is intended to present a number of ways in which GIS is used to investigate wind power, with an emphasis on the use of GIS to help expand wind power generation in an informed, efficient and responsible manner.
