Description:
Abstract:
This is a 3-m bathymetric grid with negative depth values of high-resolution multibeam echo-soundings gathered in May 2001 by the Kongsberg Simrad EM-3000 system on a boat owned by the America Samoa Government (ASG), Dept. of Marine Wildlife Resources (DMWR). Simrad EM-3000 is a 300 kHz system that fans out up to 121 beams at a 130 deg. angle, yielding swaths that are up to 4 times the water depth. The system can capture depths in the 3-150 m range at survey speeds of 3-12 knots. With differential GPS, the system is capable of centimeter resolution with an accuracy of 10-15 cm. Grid size spacing may be 30 cm to 15 m for depths in the 3-150 m range. An AML (Applied Microsystems LTD.) sound velocity probe was used to measure sound velocities at the transducer interface in real time and conduct sound velocity casts. Velocity casts were done by lowering the sensor to a maximum of 30 meters in one meter intervals.
Purpose:
This grid is a base layer for the purposes of visual overlay and comparison with other data sets around Tutuila and subsequent spatial analyses.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Depth soundings have an accuracy of ~24 m (i.e., points fall within a circle of radius 24 m). Soundings have been "cleaned" with a 2nd standard deviation filter to flag outliers (i.e., points beyond the 2nd standard deviation in Simrad bin stat post processing were flagged or removed). Tidal corrections: NOAA, verified, downloaded tide data, preliminary pressure water level data (N1) data are in meters above MLLW datum from station 1770000, Pago Pago, AS. Data have not yet been corrected with differential GPS.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed.

Process_Description:
The data were post-processed by Brian Donahue using the Caris post-processing software package. Post-processing included navigation correction, attitude editor, tide correction, and hand editing via the swath editor in Caris. Navigation editing included a linear interpolation of the points which were automatically queried for spikes in speed and time jumps. Speed jumps were set at one knot and time jumps were set at one second. The point(s) that were found to be outside these parameters were rejected and an interpolated was done from the previous point and the next point.

The Caris attitude editor was used to examine the heave, pitch, roll, and gyro information. The data was found to be very good so there was no smoothing or editing of the data. After gridding at 0.5 meters the data was analyzed line by line with the Caris swath editor. Depth spikes or points that were believed to be anomalous were flagged and rejected. The data was then regridded at 0.5 meters and exported all the accepted points in XYZ format, latitude, longitude and depth. A total of 20,734,132 points were exported. Post-processed XYZ data were gridded in Fledermaus, exported as an ArcView ascii file and converted to a raster grid with ArcToolbox.
